About Hnefatafl Game

Play hnefatafl now

This site exists so anyone can play hnefatafl, properly, in a browser, free. Six historical variants, an engine that enforces the rules exactly, and reference pages checked against the actual sources. No account, no ads chasing you around the board.

Why build another hnefatafl site

The game deserved better than it had. The existing hnefatafl web is genuinely valuable, tafl.cyningstan.com’s research and aagenielsen.dk’s play community are foundations everything else stands on, but much of it shows its age, and the wider internet around the game is a mess of copied errors: unbalanced boxed-set rules presented as ancient, invented history repeated until it looks sourced, “Viking chess” pages that can’t decide which game they mean.

So the rule here is simple: accuracy is the product. The rules summaries and setup diagrams on this site are generated from the same engine that runs the games, so documentation and gameplay can’t drift apart. Historical claims on the reference pages are checked against the scholarship, and where the scholarship is genuinely uncertain, which for a game with no surviving medieval rulebook is often, the pages say so instead of picking a confident story. If we can’t verify something, you’ll see the uncertainty labeled.

Who’s behind it

I’m Tim. I build things on the web, this being one of them; more of my work lives at timmyships.com. Hnefatafl hooked me the way it hooks most people who stay hooked: a sixty-second ruleset hiding a genuinely strange strategic problem, attached to a thousand years of history that almost got lost entirely.

Spotted an error, in a rule, a date, a translation, anything? Tell me: info@hnefataflgame.com. Corrections are a favor, not a bother, and the site’s better for every one it gets.

Start somewhere good

The game itself is on the homepage, the beginner’s guide gets you playing properly in ten minutes, the rules reference settles disputes, and the history explains how a dead Viking game ended up in your browser.
